Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. It occurs when you strain the tendon that runs along the arch of your foot, from your heel bone to your toes. Straining this tendon can cause it to become weak, swollen and inflamed. This can cause pain when you stand or walk and can occur in one foot or both feet. It is most common in people of middle age, or in people who are on their feet a lot- eg. Athletes.

Symptoms of plantar fasciitis are usually pain with first steps after getting out of bed or after resting for a period of time. It is not common to have pain in the foot at night.

We can treat plantar fasciitis with the use of soft tissue therapies (massage and Graston therapy), dry needling, mobilisation/adjustments to the foot and ankle, taping, and exercises aimed to help loosen the tight muscles around the foot and control the inflammation. We can also give you a direct referral to highly recommended Podiatrists if orthotics are needed.

Plantar fasciitis can take some time to go away. It often occurs due to faulty mechanics or injuries that have happened over a period of time. With the correct treatment most people have relief of their symptoms within a few weeks, however it can take a few months to a year to alleviate completely.
